
Location: All on-site workshops will take place in classrooms at the Student Dormitory Nova Gorica, address: Streliška pot 7, Nova Gorica, Slovenia. It is a 10 minute walk to the city centre and a 13 minute walk to the Congress venue.
Dates and timetable:
Monday, 31 July – Wednesday, 2 August, 10.00 – 13.00 and 14.30 – 17.00 AND Thursday, 3 August, 10.00 – 13.30.
Prices will include course fees with patterns and colour code drawings, where available, and lunches. Courses will be provided in English and, if necessary, also in French.
Requirements for the Bobbin lace courses: Participants need their own lacemaking equipment: a roller pillow 35 cm, basket, bobbins, pins, crochet hook, and scissors. A roller pillow and basket may be borrowed at the course free of charge. Lacemaking equipment and thread can also be purchased at the course. A flat pillow may be used, but we highly recommend a roller pillow, because the experience of making Slovene Lace on the flat pillow is not the same.
Accommodation: Course participants will be able to book various types of accommodation from the Student Dormitory to four-star hotels through the website OIDFA.com. You can also book transport to and from the workshops.

Slovenian Lace with an Italian Touch
Tutor: Matejka Jakob Oven, Lace teacher, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenian lace was influenced by Italy due to geographical proximity and historical reasons. In this course participants will learn techniques such as narrow cloth stitch, half-blind cloth stich, and the Slovenian version of the Cantu flower which shows the influence of Italy on Slovenian lace.
Participants will receive the pattern and technical drawings in the international colour code system.
Basic bobbin lacemaking skills are required. Participants will need 7 pairs of bobbins and cotton thread number 30.

A Rose, the Flower of Nova Gorica
Tutor: Simona Strgulc Krajšek, Lace teacher, Ljubljana, Slovenia
As Nova Gorica is also known as ‘The City of Roses’, we selected a lace with a rose motif, from the catalogue of the company DOZ which operated in Ljubljana from 1919 to 1946, and redesigned it into a bookmark pattern. The lace is made in narrow tape, tape with inside pins, leaves (tallies) and two different fillings.
Participants will receive the pattern and technical drawings in the international colour code system. The workshop is suitable for skilled lacemakers.
Participants will need 14 pairs of bobbins, and cotton thread number 40 in a light colour.

Three Pairs Flanders Stitch
Tutors: Manuela Benfatto and Patrizia Cattarossi, Lace teachers from the Association Fuselliamo, Gradisca d’Isonzo, Italy
This technique originated in Gorizia during the 1930s. It is the most typical of the laces from Gorizia and it is worked with 3 pairs of bobbins.
Participants will receive the pattern and technical drawings in the international colour code system.
Participants will need 6 pairs of bobbins and cotton thread number 40/2.

Milanese Lace from the Ursulines’ Convent of Gorizia
Tutors: Federica Geotti and Antinisca Vicentini, Lace teachers from the Association Fuselliamo, Gradisca d’Isonzo, Italy
Participants will learn some Milanese stitches reconstructed from a lace of the Ursuline nuns dating back to the 18th century.
Pattern and technical drawings, in the international colour code system, will be provided.
Participants will need 36 pairs of bobbins and cotton thread number 40/2.

Aemilia Ars Needle Lace
Tutors: Lace teachers from Associazione I merletti di Antonilla Cantelli, Bologna, Italy
Aemilia Ars is a needle lace from Bologna, a town in northern Italy. It originates from Reticella, but quickly developed into Punto in aria based on famous pattern books from Bologna. Participants will make lace according to motifs from drawings by Italian engraver and etcher Bartolomeo Danieli.
Two patterns will be available: for beginners and for lacemakers who already have some skills in needle lacemaking.
Patterns, support cards, needles, threads and explanation notes will be provided at the course. Participants should bring their own scissors and thimble.
